Baby, Toddler and Child Sun Hats

I've got Sun Hat fever here at the moment. Perhaps due to it being over 30C, humid and sunny everyday. Wet season? what wet season?!

Here are a few of the creations I've come up with.

These Sun Hats can be made with a:
  • Reversible side
  • Chin strap
  • Matching detachable hair bow

5 Tips for Faster Sewing!

Want to sew faster?
                                      Me too!
Here are 5 quick tips I've learned to speed things up...

  1. If you're going to make multiples of the same project then set time aside to exclusively trace and cut your pattern pieces for each project. Either straight afterward or the next time you are ready to sew you will have all your pattern pieces ready to go. Then repeat each sewing step mulitple times over eg. Complete Step 1 for each of the 5 dresses you're sewing, then go onto Step 2 and do this 5 times over
  2. Read the instructions first. It's my pet hate as I'm the type of person that wants to get right into it but trust me it's better then getting halfway through and realising you need 1" non-roll elastic and can't go on.
  3. If you have a cheeky monkey running around like my Miss 20 months, be prepared. Set aside a basket, bag or section of your table for their play. I have thinking putty (you can use play dough), movies on my tablet, small toys, pencils, paper, pipe cleaners, snacks, drinks etc. All so you dont have to get up too many times to entertain them.
  4. If I'm a pattern tester or sewing a project for the first time I dont do multiples and I take notes. Obviously if the pattern doesn't work I dont ruin lots of fabric but also so that if something within the instructions doesn't make sense or is a typo I can correct the problem quickly and note it down for future reference. There's nothing worse than unpicking stitches on multiple mistakes or redoing the same mistake because you forgot to write it down.
  5. Clean your machine! When the bobbin catches, the stitches skip, all that fluff everywhere and countless other problems that cause you to stop sewing and sort it out will slow you down. Look after your tools and your tools will look after you!
This list isn't exclusive as I'll be adding more tips later,
in the meantime what's your tip?

The 'Cheer Me Up' Toddler Bucket Hat

Either I'm simply technically challenged or losing a huge amount of data and plenty of sewing photographs was simply meant to be.

So I needed cheering up.

Miss 20ms was almost due for a new hat and I envisaged a sort of 'day at the races hat', reversible with a 'playground' theme on the other side.

This is what I came up with...

I put in a chin strap that will work both ways and made the hat for her to wear at ages
3 to approx. 5 yrs, so it sits a little big on her for now.

The bow is a hair bow with a single prong clip that attaches to the chin strap hole.
I realised it works really well for fixing up that 'hat hair' situation once that hat comes off.

Pretty good for a first time making a hat so all in all it did help to cheer me up!

I'm considering making a few more and see how they do in The Shop - different styles though. I thought perhaps a black and white theme, some small polka dots in light colours and perhaps a vintage flowery number.

What toddler hat designs have you thought looked great?

Tropical North Queensland Holiday

I'm Baaaack... from our impromptu whirlwind holiday.

It can be so hard trying to do anything on your own (toddler always in tow) let alone planning a holiday when you have a FIFO family.

How exciting to wake up one morning and think let's just pack the car and take off....
So we did!

Paronella Park
How amazing is this place! I'm no history buff but was totally drawn in by the story behind this amazing castle and property. Wear sneakers though the tracks aren't smooth and just in case your 24 weeks pregnant like I was you don't want to trip! Cabins don't have ensuites and are very small but nice and clean. Entry covers you for 2 years with a chance to renew for free.

Mamu Rainforest Walk
It was a nice walk but I probably wouldn't do it again considering there are plenty of rainforest walks in this area that are free. Entry is about $20 an adult. You walk along a dirt track before getting to the gangway. A lot of the rainforest was cleared due to the past cyclone and we were walking in the dry season so that lush tropical feel was a bit lacking. Highlight of the walk was the viewing tower toward the end. It was nice and peaceful till the older couple we met at Paronella Park happened to be there too and kept freaking out that Miss 20 months wanted to try go back down the stairs. The older woman's nervousness was making me nervous, jumping every time my little one took a step. Then (as toddlers do) Miss 20 months did a no.#2 and the older woman abruptly announced "Ok men we're all going back down now" to change her nappy, I was less than impressed. I'd just climbed over 5 flights, pregnant without the chance to take in a quiet peaceful view of the mountains.

Tchupala Falls

Quite a lovely walk. Just watch any stinging nettles growing by the path, so maybe closed in shoes are a good idea. No entry fee. The falls are pretty big and impressive but the access stairs down to the water is blocked off. Once again past cyclones have damaged them and it's restricted based on safety reasons. Mind you this didn't stop my partner in crime.

Milla Milla Falls

There are two entries to the falls. There's the road for cars and one for buses. Take the bus access road if you don't want to walk down the stairs or you have a pram like we did. The falls are much better during wet season but still quite a lovely place. The water was beyond freezing when we went but there is a hidden little path around the water's edge that will take you right up behind the falls.

Atherton Crystal Caves

Miss 20 months loved running around in here. You're allowed to take photos and touch anything within reach, music to the ears of parents! It's about $20 entry per adult and not what you assume to be hiding within a simple shop front. The Princess of Uruguay is amazing and there are a few other hidden treasures in there too including a waterfall and 3D balls.

Mareeba Coffee Works

We did the all you can eat/drink chocolate and coffee section that includes the coffee museum entry. The coffee museum is interesting it is almost like looking at every single coffee pot, grinder, tea set, roaster EVER made. It's a self guided tour with those audio remotes so you go at your own pace. The coffee was good too but I really was there for the chocolate. The chocolate was amazing! I've never tried chilli chocolate before or lemongrass or pepper, surprisingly really good! Don't worry the milk chocolate was excellent and they have an abundance of it.

Mt Uncles Distillery

Well I really cant report on this one. I haven't had a drink since we decided to start a family and that was over 2 years ago! However they were missing about 3 or 4 spirits but what they did have (according to partner in crime) was good. Food and hospitality was lovely. On the way out there's a paddock with goats, donkeys and a cow which of course we had to stop at. Miss 20 months had been singing 'Old McDonald' the whole trip so was wrapped to see the animals.

Lake Barrine

Well it's history is interesting. An extinct volcano filled with fresh water surrounded by rainforest containing epic cedars. We only stopped by briefly but the tea house is a lovely spot for a meal. There is a boat to take you on tours if you want and plenty of ducks for the kids to chase around or feed. Apart from that, that's all there really is... oh there is a rainforest walk but at this point in the journey I couldn't be arsed.

Cairns Big 4 Caravan Park

We only stayed one night but so worth it if you've got children. Water park, jumping pillows, playground, multiple swimming pools and free pancake brekky. A bit pricey to stay one night but when you weigh up the odds of a child burning off steam versus saving a few bucks it's worth it.

Balaclava Hotel Cairns

The steaks are AMAZING - nothing more needs to be said.

Cairns Kuranda Skyrail

A little pricey and I'd probably only do it once. Was a pleasant peaceful experience and Miss 20 months loved it. We stopped in Kuranda for lunch and attended the markets. The markets weren't that epic and we were hard pressed to find a nice place to eat. Maybe we weren't looking in the right places?

Port Douglas Quicksilver Boat to Adgen Court Reef

If you're prone to motion sickness or pregnant pack some pills with you. They hand you ginger pills for free on the boat but if you want anything stronger you'll need to pay for them. Unfortunately ginger pills are all I can take so for the most part of the journey there I had to grit my teeth and bare it. On the way back I got out of the cabin and we all played on the deck in the sea breeze which made the world of difference.
The actual pontoon seems smaller than I'd imagined but the food was decent, there was an abundance of crew help and the facilities they had promised were all there eg. diving, snorkeling, viewing deck, glass boat etc. They gave us free stinger suits and Miss 20 months looked oh so cute dressed like a bumblebee with her orange life jacket and black suit. We held her and a pool noodle and took turns snorkeling in the ocean. She loved it.

Josephine Falls

As you drive in here it seems like you'd be the only one... err wrong. It is unexpectedly packed and for good reason. The walk is so lovely set amongst a lush rainforest alongside a creek. Once you get to the falls the water is freezing but its about 30C and humid so you don't end up caring too much. There was only one good rock slide (due to the dry season) but it looked fun - I was on Mum duty so couldn't do it. The only downside and what really pissed me off was a huge tour of Asian tourists carving their names into the rock. It could have been anyone doing it and I'd feel the same way. What gives you the right to deface something that's not yours??

Mission Beach

There's not much here and it was quite disappointing. We did eventually (after a horrendous stay at one motel) find the Big 4 Caravan park with the most charismatic hostess and great facilities. Across the road is Mission Beach Boat Hire. We rented a boat for half the day which was excellent. We drove it over to Dunk Island and a few other nearby beaches. Was a superb way to cap off the trip. Miss 20 months could barely keep her eyes open and passed out for half the trip.

TIPS:

If I could only offer 2 tips from my experience it's:
  1. Pick up those voucher books you see in the tourist pamphlet info walls... We missed SO many 2 for 1 deals, 50% off's etc. It's worth thumbing through them just in case.
  2. Stay in Caravan Parks if you have kids. There's almost always play equipment and pools which gives you some much needed 'keep the kid happy' time.

When I get some extra time i'll post up some pictures of each place...

My style of Christmas Fabrics

As you know I'm very excited about Christmas this year.
After doing the rounds of the fabric shops here since well August to be honest I'm yet to find any Christmas fabric that appeals to me.
Then I stumbled upon this ...
    ...and fell in love!

So made these...

The best part of using fabrics that dont have Christmas Trees or Snowballs etc is that you can use them all year round. You can also add extra accesories that wont overdo the outfit, like gorgeous Christmas hairclips that are inexpensive.
I picked up a 4 pack from Prices Plus for $2! and they were ribbon bound clips too - score!

Sizes are from 6 months to 7 years.

Not bad eh? Think I might get cracking on a few more designs.
Since the computer crashed today I cant upload a pic of what they look like on (long story) but if you're interested here they are on a very cute little model!

Why I sell through Etsy and not through Facebook

How's your day going so far?
I'm here sewing up a few custom orders and it has me thinking how I go about my sewing endeavours (which I refuse to call a business, I'll save that explanation for another day).
Selling through Etsy (a third party):
  • Gives me comfort in knowing I will not miss an order or a message.
There's no wading through wall timelines, album comments or disappearing messages to find out that three people want to order one available item. Which then leads onto who to pick to receive that item as 99% of my pieces are individual designs.
  • The fees are reasonable. Currently $0.20 USD for a listing and 3.5% of the sale price. It would be lovely not to pay fees but "business is business" and everyone has a family to clothe and feed.
  • There is no exchange of financial details. This part I love!
  • And since I have only chosen Paypal (which if you don't have, why not? it's awesome!) rest assured you are securely using your funds to make easy and best of all quick purchases online.
  • There are also systems in place for disagreements and ratings which is always nice to view before you purchase.
Facebook:
  • Don't get me wrong I like Facebook just as much as the next person and in fact this is my Amidst The Calm Page so feel free to like me (haha, I always enjoy seeing new likes as much as the next person). I just don't feel like it is streamlined enough for me to sell any of my pieces on it.
  • I think the only exception would be a custom order that has been built upon a rapport of messages wherein you would feel comfortable in paying for the item through your own Paypal account to mine.
  • Running giveaways and competitions are much easier using My Blog as the rules on Facebook seem too intense for me!
  • At the end of the day it's up to personal preference and there are plenty of great businesses out there that have made Facebook work for them.
The Blog:
  • Ok so the Blog is more rambles than anything but it's great headspace for me. When you have a FIFO family or as I've also heard it called "Working Widow" and you live and breathe for your little one, dawn to dusk, it's really nice to be a part of something separate to that. 'Mum' by day, 'Crazy-blogging-sewing-diva' listening to Skrillex and Birdy by night!

Exploding Oven Door

Miss 19 months and I came home from Playgroup to see this...

I didn't even know this could happen.
Partner in crime had baked a meat pie, went to open the door and it exploded!
Thank God our baby wasn't hugging our shins or hovering about as she usually does when it happened.
You know when you're told not to touch something like a bruise and all you manage to do is keep bumping it??
That's what I feel life is like now. We were at Coles when we realised we forgot something for dinner. He ran back to grab a lasagna, we paid then burst out laughing realising we have no oven!!
Every purchase, craving, meal prep seems to need an oven - I didn't realise how much we used it.
Bugger and there I go again! I was going to make scones for brekky and playgroup and I've just realised. *Sigh* sliced fruit it is!
